Should take a couple of hours. Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Sun, 12 Feb 2012 05:40:48 In Reply to: Re: turbo-manifold gasket (1990 SPG), spgeez, Sat, 11 Feb 2012 19:23:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You don't need to actually remove the turbo from the car, just remove the four bolts. All of the water and oil lines can remain attached (they will hold the turbo in place while you change the gasket). You'll need to remove the skid plate so that you can reach a couple of the large bolts holding the turbo to the manifold from below.
Once you get the four bolts off, slide the turbo forward about a 1/4 of an inch and slip the gasket in between the manifold and the turbo. Then you just need to tighten everything back up.
The only tough part, as noted above, is breaking the rust on the bolts in the first place. getting an angle on the lower bolts to achieve the necessary leverage is a bit tough. I typically use a 12 inch cheater bar on my ratchet so that i have an 18-20 inch leaver to break then loose with. There's not a lot of room to manuever on the lower bolts - just keep working them and trying different wrenches. IIRC, I use a short socket on the end nearest the front of the car, and a box-end wrench on the other end.
