Most of the labor costs are for the R&R. Actually tearing down the tranny and reassembly with new parts is fairly quick (I've seen one torn down in about a half hour). Eriksson Industries used to offer an oversize pinion bearing and carrier that is definitely worth considering. Contact them to see if it is still available.
You can drop the tranny out the bottom without removing the engine (I posted the instructions quite a while ago, do a search on Transmission removal out the bottom). That saves quite a bit on R&R time.
If you get a used transmission, it's probably worth the $$ to at least replace the pinion bearing before installing it, given the potential for trashing another transmission and the hassle of removing it later if it fails.
