Thanks to all for the comments on removal of the upper jamnuts on ABS and non ABS cars. I think there are some basic categories of the types of removal summarized as follows:
1) The Slasher Approach: Rotary high speed grinder at the upper bushing or just above the shock body
2) The Jacker Approach: Thin wrench on the bottom with an impact gun to muscle off the top nut, though I wondered how in the world you get the impact gun under / around the evaporator housing.
3) The Ripper Approach: This is the least elegant of the methods and the one we used. After the top nut is spun off the top threads of the shock, you notice that the bottom nut is corrosion welded to the top threads. Use a monster breaker bar with an extension, after you rip the shock off the bottom mount and bend the damn thing sideways so the breaker bar will twist off the rest of the stem from the shock.
4) On the car next to this one, the engine is out, and I plan to try a nut cracker to break both nuts on one side releasing them from the shock stem.
What I was trying to find was a way to do this without power tools. The Ripper Approach came the closest, but it required two people. I'll find out if the nutcracker approach works on the next one and report back.
