Well, to any of the guys who were trying to help me along when I posted here about three weeks ago with a "no-start" situation after a thorough engine/ engine bay rebuild on my '88 vert...the mystery is finally solved!
Here's the culprits: The "gang ground", (for lack of a better name) on the right side lower radiator support was getting ground, but not enough I guess. The voltage drop, because of resistance caused by a poor ground was reaking havok. That was a small part of the problem. That situation was remedied by really scraping away all of my beautiful paintwork and really getting a solid ground. Then it was covered in dielectric grease to prevent any corrosion. The big problem though, was that the ECU wasn't getting grounded. It looks for ground at the motor pull tab, (so I'm told). My ground there was solid, but witin the harness that runs along the fuel rail, across the firewall, into the right fender rear pocket, and then finally to the ECU, the ground dissapeared. The Saab mechanic that actually figured all of this out said, " Within that harness you'll find a ground wire. Either broken, corroded, or deteriorated". He chased the ground wire leaving the ECU about six inches into the harness and snipped it and put a eye terminal on it's end and picked up a chassis ground just above the ECU. He said that will work fine, but if I want it "factory" that I should unwrap the harness all the way from the ECU to the engine pull tab to find where the affected area is on that ground wire. Gotta admit, if that ground is satisfying the ECU, I think I'm done with this part of the journey!
The engine runs great, I get the car back tomorrow. Don't know the cost yet for their diagnostic time, but the car runs again after 1-1/2 years of silence. I'm almost reluctant to say this, but whatever it costs was worth it to hear this car run again! Thanks to Justin, Jeff, Zig,turbocon, RayF. You guys were all on exactly the right track, I was just a little out of my league with the electrics, (read: multimeter challenged). Thank you guys.......IT'S ALIIIIIIVE!
