Intermittent tach operation Posted by Landjet [Email] (#16) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Landjet) on Mon, 5 Mar 2012 19:55:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1989 turbo hatchback. The following new or operating items were replaced to try to solve a rich running condition. Barely a hint of black smoke, but it can be seen. CEL will clear and then illuminate after it gets warm. I thought maybe the CEL was illuminating if there was no tach signal, but it took 5 minutes for the CEL to come on. It runs well, and the engine operation sounds good.
I still haven't pulled the codes yet, as I was spending time correcting / troubleshooting below.
1) New NTC
2) AMM OK
3) Checked TPS OK
4) O2 sensor reading about .74 up to .86 volts
5) Cleaned grounds and connections to the above
6) Replaced engine vacuum lines, gromments, check valve.
OK, so all the above still doesn't yet solve the slightly rich condition, but the annoying thing is the tach will intermittently function.
Can the wiring to the coil have anything to do with the wacky tach? Or ignition wires causing interference? Or the connector to the distributor?
I would think that if the tach itself was bad, it would either work or not at all.....
