also check all battery cables Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Thu, 8 Mar 2012 11:08:10 In Reply to: check alt. wiring, thresholdmusic, Thu, 8 Mar 2012 09:40:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
...in addition to oldsaab's excellent advice. As thresholdmusic says, the voltage across the battery with the car running should be in the >13.5V ballpark. I had one running around 12.7V with a perfectly good alternator (and requiring a battery recharge every 2 weeks): there was too much resistance in the red battery cable. If your battery cables are original, the insulation is quite possibly deteriorating, letting in moisture, and causing havoc. In my case the red cable was cracking near a cable clamp low down on the chassis between the motor + battery. I looked in my other car + it was worse: insulation was peeling off in chunks (surprisingly it ran just fine)! so I replaced both of them. Both cars charge just fine now. I'm not sure how much climate plays a role in the rate of insulation deterioration, but fwiw, we get big swings: cold winters, hot summers...
That might not be your problem, but it's something easy to check!
