It took me longer than I had hoped, but the car is purring away happily. I barely had to turn the key and it fired right up instantly! Hopefully, the extra time spent cleaning and prepping surfaces will pay off in the long run.
The only hiccup was that I had the exhaust cam one tooth off when I first put the timing chain cogs back on. After replacing the tensioner and turning the flywheel 30 degrees back and forth, the mark on the exhaust camshaft was off. Easy to fix, but it probably cost me 45 minutes or so.
I had help pulling the head/exhaust manifold off the block, and it was a bit of a struggle to get it free, but only took 2 or 3 minutes. I had a different helper to put the head back on (without the exhaust manifold) and it took at least a full minute to get it to seat correctly. Total time spent in the garage: 14 hours. I'm sure I could do it in 8-10 hrs the next time.
