C Myles is the expert on this, but I think a major reason for premature disintegration is inadequate fluid change frequency. I have one that probably had had almost zero ATF changes prior to our ownership and was going south around 100k. I did a triple change + it has stabilized now for a couple years. The stuff that came out was black. When it dies it gets a stick.
Our other one failed in reverse a while ago. back then it was our only car + at least one automatic was desired by the powers that be... so our fantastic saab indy swapped in a used one from a car out back (for a great deal) + it has been running pretty well, but is starting to have the 2-3 shift go up + leaks atf very slowly... atf in that car is pretty clean but I will drain/refill again this spring...
Somebody (Saabnutt maybe?) has one or 2 of these automatics up over 200k... regular fluid changes are key...
imho, biggest problem with the automatics in these cars is lack of a 4th gear for the highway...
James...
