If you see a 900 in a new movie or a movie made in the last 5 years it's usually belongs to someone on the crew and is in the back ground. Cars can and are cast because of street closures and other unnatural occurrences during production. So, it's easy to use crew members cars because they will be there every day. Watch the back ground of many movies and you will see the same cars over and over again.
If a 900 is cast as a star car that's much more unusual because generally you would want two cars minimum, a picture car and a stand in car. A third car is helpful if shooting on a stage so the car can be cut away and lighted properly. To find three Saab of similar vintage is not hard but on location that task gets harder. You can get away with two non running cars if you're going to trailer the exterior driving scenes. That's only good for closeups and thight medium shots.
If in LA it's easier because of services that provide all types of cars for production. Cars are easy continuity problems for people like us. People who will quickly see small discrepancies in trim, etc. To use a Saab is much more difficult than a Ford or Toyota. Don't forget manufactures place cars for product placement and fees paid to production. Saab obviously won't be doing that. The bonding company can also be funny if safety of the actors is in question.
I didn't see the movie you're talking about but think its cool that production went through the trouble to use one and I promise it was trouble.
