For the most part, instrument clusters don't swap. They made stupid changes to the printed circuit virtually every year which prevents any sort of swapping. You can generally get away with swapping '86-'88, and '89 through '93, but you definitely can't cross the '89 model year. You will short something out, as the polarity of the shift up and check engine light changed. Sometimes you can swap the printed circuit and keep the gauges, but again I would be cautious about crossing '89, as the anti-slosh circuitry on the fuel gauge changed in there somewhere and you can fry the circuit or the gauge if you get it wrong. The tach stayed the same from beginning to end save for the font, but everything else changed one or more times.
