Alternator install/bushing Q Posted by Shaun [Email] (#683) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Shaun) on Mon, 28 May 2012 04:37:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Car was making a weird screeching noise Friday night during drive. Got home and noticed the alternator was cocked toward firewall. Removed it Sat. with great effort. Mechanic who replaced it stucked a fully threaded bolt in place of the stock one that holds the alt. to the mounting bracket. Man I was PO'd. Bracket and alt. had to come out together because the threaded bolt would not slide through...had to tap it out once out of car. Anyway, I have some Qs b/c Bentley's assumes alot on alternators....even the Saab manual I have isn't much help.
1. Does the mounting bracket need to be in place, albeit, loosely, before I put the alt on it. I know the mounting bolt is used a leverage per Townsend site.
2. I ordered both stock and urethane bushings from site sponser. I don't doubt urethane lasts longer but I remember they were a pain when I installed them years ago, i.e., they didn't compress and it was tough getting the nut to stay on. Any thoughts out there.
3. Which way to the bushings install...Bentley's says nothing. The only picture I could find is in the Saab parts book I have. The left bushing seems to insert from the outside in....and I can't remember how the right one inserts while sitting here at the computer.
4. I went to Lowes and Ace Hardware looking for the long bolt. All I could find was a 100mm length bolt at Ace, but it was too short. Ended up buying an SAE grade 8 bolt that was 5" long. Would prefer metric. Any idea where such a replacement bolt could be found?
