You can try this: Get the car rolling in a forward gear, step on the clutch and listen for the noise. You can even turn off the engine if needed. Then while still rolling shift into neutral while continuing to hold the clutch pedal down and listen for the noise. This attempts to isolate three elements; 1) the clutch, 2) the input section of the transmission and 3) the output section of the transmission and final drive. If this noise just developed quickly with a transmission that is otherwise working fine then there's a fair chance that it's due to a defective clutch component as Sandy suggested. You may also benefit from listening around the transmission with a stethoscope while the car idles in neutral.
