guy:
The air distribution control (heater-vent combi switch) looks scary but all the various vacuum hoses to it go to a big puck that unplugs entire from the switch, with all hoses still on it and undisturbed.
As to that black tube, save it. They're very helpful in leading those long screws back in to go straight vertical from bottom to top. Often they're broken out of the plastic supports that held them but they can be reattached - - I did it by drilling some tiny holes and lacing them down onto their proper positions with thin wire, like that florists use, or, in my case, got by burning the plastic off baggie twist-ties.
Tighten everything up with a little hot melt craft glue when done lacing.
Some people have replaced missing ones with plastic drinking straws.
I'm trying to remember doing what you're doing, but drawing a blank as to specifics. Be gentle but persistent, look for things that may be holding it up.
