The left axle is always a different length than the right, but in ~'88 Saab added ~10mm (IIRC) to BOTH axles so they'd seat deeper in the inner driver. You can safely move earlier driveshafts to later and vice versa, but that can create issues with NVH due to wear patterns in the driver. The driveshafts are of dramatically different lengths left to right, though - I don't think it'd be possible to confuse a driver's for a passenger's. I have a picture of the four sizes somewhere - I'll see if I can find it.
