Hello,
I have a 87 16 valve turbo with a noisy timing chain and I'm wondering about something. I took the head cover off tonight and found the chain to be far more tight than any other chain I've seen to date. I also notice that the rub pad on the head cover has a pretty good groove in it.

(It's number 1 in the above link)

It is very much like the second example in this link. I removed the chain tensioner and found that it was extended it's full length. I don't know how the engine ran so well like this for so long but it makes appreciate such fine automotive engineering.
I am considering pulling the engine and replacing the guide shoe and the tension arm that the chain rides on. I'm fairly familiar with taking these things apart but this is the first step into the world of timing chains. Anything I should know about taking the back apart(really the front) and replacing the chain, and two guides? Also, what else should I keep a eye out for, considering the age of the engine and possible wear from a too tight chain? The engine does run like a beast, if it didn't make this noise I'd count my lucky stars for landing a engine with this much moxie.
Thanks,
Miles
