Seat skin differences between years/bodies?

I've seen different opinions about seat skin compatibility. I have a new-old skin that I'm attempting to put on, but I'm having a hell of a time getting it on, the back almost seems too short and the fit seems weird.
Are there differences between sedans and verts/3-doors? My car is an 87 convertible, and I'm wondering if perhaps the skin i have is from a different year/body style, or whether I just need to back up and try to reposition it or just use more force!
