Just who is saying that the car needs a new fuel pump?

There are many on here who report fuel pump trouble, and many who have replaced fuel pumps, and many who steer people to their fuel pumps. And I'm sure fuel pumps have in fact failed on many C900s.

But I personally have never experienced fuel pump failure on any of the four C900s I have had in my fleet, with about 100,000 miles put on under me, and all with well over 150,000 miles on them before I got them. And neither of the three 9000s I have had, total about 60,000 miles driven, has had any fuel pump problem, all with over 150,000 miles when I got them and all with apparently original pumps.

The fuel pumps on these cars sometimes don't run but that isn't necessarily a sign that the fuel pumps are bad; they aren't being told to run, is often the problem.

I don't know anything about your car or your problems but I urge you to seek an unbiased opinion of why it isn't running, without mentioning a word about the fuel pump first if possible, from someone C900 experienced and with a good reputation.

Your story of three separate diagnoses of a bad fuel pump on the same car, and of two replacements by you with pumps that should have been good for lifetimes of use, makes me worry.

There are some very simple tests to make the fuel pump run if it will, that can be done on your car as it sits, that need to be done first.

And there's a trick, spray some combustible substance, such as carburetor cleaner, into the intake manifuld through some port (there are a few rubber caps over openings, or vacuum lines you can pull, to let you do this), after which, if failure to get fuel is the problem, the motor should temporarily roar to life. Still wouldn't necessarily mean the fuel pump is bad, but only that it is not running or that you're out of gas or that there's some blockage or other failure, or POSSIBLY a bad pump. But this is also a quick test to help steer you right.

I can't remember where you said you are but there might be a gentleman Saab lover nearby who could come at least to the diagnosis of the problem, if not to your rescue.

The cars have their weaknesses and their old-age failings but if the body is good and the motor not overheated or otherwise badly failing, and if the transmission is good, you could get many years of fun and reliable driving, at good gas mileage, 22+ up to over 30, out of your car.

Is it a 5-speed or an automatic?

The bad mileage-bad running complaints make me think maybe of spark plug-plug wire troubles, not too expensive to fix.
