Nope. Replaced my rack on my lowered spg this past spring just on jack stands. I think i asked the brain trust here about how high is high enough (maybe used those words) and the consensus was high enough to be "comfortable" under there.

Not sure if you you have back up transportation, but it helped me as i
allowed the system to drain first (gravity over night) and picked away at removing items over the weekend. I was able to dismantle everything alone which left me time to clean the floor and undercarriage prior to having a second set of hands come by to assist the install.

I replaced pretty much the entire system with the exception of the high pressure line (used a used pump) including the steering u joint (good used one). My take is while its out, if the part is questionable, replace it. My return line did leak (which i found out later) so I had to go back in to replace it later with a Gates unit which didn't quite fit right. If you can get your old lines rebuilt by a hydraulic line rebuilder i would recommend that. Added an inline PS filter from Autozone and did all swaybar bushing since they were there.

Keeping things as clean as possible(i know, its tough) makes things much more enjoyable. I did need to pull the speedo cable (I think thats what it was) from the tranny to get the rack to rotate to remove/install properly but did not need to remove the shifter taper pin.

Page me to the courtesy phone if you have any questions - I lurk daily 'cause i have no life.

Oh, the townsend site is a good resource as well. Between Saabnet and Townsend, I can't remember if I even used my Bentley during the process although I did spend considerable amounts of time studying prior to tackling the job.

My sweatshirt i was wearing still smells of PS fluid so be ready and yes, beer is an absolute necessity.

Take Care,
Nate

PS I used a Napa rack whose rebuilder is Cardone (some good info on that website as well)
