How's about this for a theory:
The transmission has gotten worse, and started behaving like the throttle cable is too loose again. But the cold-weather performance has noticeably increased. The thing used to not go into Drive right away on cold mornings, and now it does that fine. I have only ever filled this transmission with type F or type FA. I noticed, as I added the fluid after the governor unsticking, that my cold bottles of type F were much more viscous than my cold bottles of type FA. I also added significantly more FA than I usually end up doing (store that sold plain F fluid was closed).
Now, nobody on the internet will tell me what the difference is (or if there even IS a difference) between F and FA. They both meet the same Ford spec, both lack the Dexron-style friction modifiers. But maybe FA is some sort of multi-grade, or at least thinner, version of F. It seems to me that perhaps the seals in this unit are old and the clearances in pumps and valves are large, and the higher concentration of FA has the ability to seep past them, perhaps losing me pressure.
What do you think? Possible?
