In a case like that the proper approach is to remove the differential, unbolt the ring gear, re-install the differential and determine the carrier bearing preload. That tells you the total thickness of the shim pack (left and right sides combined) Then replace the ring gear and set the backlash by swapping shims from side to side. Finally do a transfer pattern test to assure correct placement. If you have a manual the procedure and specs are in there, if not re-post and I can provide the specs. Keep in mind that the preload specs for used bearings are different than for new ones.
