My approach is to gauge how long I will likely have to wait at the light and choose neutral or clutch accordingly. If I see by the yellow light (or by the pedestrian crossing signals) that I'm not going to make it through without a stop I slip it into neutral and coast at idle up to the intersection-- I see no reason to hurry up and wait. Somewhat related, I almost always skip 1st gear, resuming fwd travel in 2nd. Unless you're going uphill, that 1st-2nd gear shift seems like a waste of rpms and clutch service.
