After looking more closely at the Saab service manual, I found a picture on page 210-7 that shows the end plate with a starter location on the exhaust side.
However, the exploded view in the same book, shows the starter plate housing on the intake side.
So, Saabrally was correct and now I understand the difference.
I suppose one of the final tests will be if we can take an 85 end plate and put it on an 81 engine block to move the starter to the intake side. I think Saabrally is indicating that wouldn't work.....
