you can try swapping parts until you find the wrong one - that's quite popular approach and sometimes it works well. I'm on the other side where it's preferred to first do some measurements and checks; I'd initially suspect the fuel pump (use pressure gauge to measure the pressure in the fuel rail as you play with the throttle on the running engine) and the air-mass meter (use the oscilloscope to see the signal form as you zealously open the throttle). I'd also check the signal from crankshaft position sensor - I don't think the sensor is faulty, but the wiring can be damaged and can go shortened e.g. to the engine body.
The popular auction site lists lots of devices under $100 which are suitable for such diagnostics, but I'd prefer the ones under $200.
