If it has anything to do with the inner drivers or other axle components it won't just happen when you put the transmission in drive from park, those components have their own specific failure modes that aren't consistent with your brief description. When you shift the transmission into drive you pressurize the front (or "forward") drum clutch and it remains pressurized as long as the unit is in a forward range. Shifting to neutral, park or reverse depressurizes the front clutch. There is an accumulator that cushions the application of pressure to the front clutch. You may have either a defective accumulator or a broken front clutch. Both are fairly common in these units when they reach a certain mileage and either will cause a "slamming" effect when drive is engaged. It is sometimes possible to fix a defective accumulator without removing the unit from the car but fixing a bad front clutch is something that happens when the unit is overhauled. Accessing the forward accumulator is not much fun when the car is on a lift and a total PIA to do on jack-stands. When doing the job you'll spend about 1-2 hours looking up into the unit while ATF drips on your face (it never stops!).
