Not that it's going to help in any way, but I have a '92 900S that does the same thing. Crank it for the first time and it will crank for quite a few seconds, and if you wait long enough it will (somewhat sluggishly) start. Instead, crank for a few seconds then turn it off, crank a second time and it fires right up.
Whether your '89 has a crankshaft sensor depends on whether it's a turbo or not. Turbos (non-EZK ignition) don't, '89 and later non-turbos (EZK ignition) do. Not that I necessarily think it has anything to do with the sensor -- just clarifying. The sensor is hidden behind the crankshaft pulley -- hard to see.
