Honestly, I don't think it's Johnson Controls that's the problem, but the actual Optima technology. Back in the day, it was fancy and experimental and seemed promising, but Exide - the folks that invented the technology - abandoned it years and years ago when it proved to be a dead end.
My personal belief is that Optima is now caught in a Catch-22 - they either abandon the technology that makes Optimas Optimas, or they keep manufacturing it and raise price or lower cost to make up for warranty claims. IMHO, it's apparent which route they chose. The right answer is adopt one of the multitude of modern battery technologies and sell that instead, but there is probably less money in making a genuinely good 2013 battery than there is in riding one's decade old reputation. :(
Again, I have no proof of any of this - just opinions formed from reading crap on the net.
