dicking around with 'cheap' options than just getting on with it. Do you know when the HG was done last? Always good peace of mind, PLUS you probably have oil leaking out the front right corner of the HG anyways, so a great time to get that taken care of. The fact that you got the car cheap is no reason to cheap out on long term maintenance-you want it to last, right?

I usually find it takes about the same amount of time to just rip the bandaid off, instead of trying to creep up on the thing. In fact, i just pull the 'lump' whenever i have a new-to-me car, as there is plenty of stuff that needs to get looked at (motor mounts, alt mounts, water pump, harmonic balancer, oil pump seals, etc, etc), and it is so much easier to do it that way.
