My theory developed when I purchased my first c900 -
Use a good quality oil - I've used Redline MTL for 20 years.
Change it regularly - it gets hot down there and heat works to break down the lube qualities we want in there.
Inspect the debris on the drain magnet - when the tiny shiny flecks begin to appear - rebuild it with new bearings - the tiny shiny bits are the hardened surfaces of balls, rollers, and races of the bearings beginning to fail.
I agree with CMyles -
Treat it gently till warmed up.
Keep clutch fully functional.
Don't shift faster than the synchros can handle and use a gentle hand on the shifter.
I currently have a beautifully maintained '92S 5-spd that I purchased with a cracked trans case, 185K - waiting for a replacement trans.
My guess is that the pinion bearings failed, allowing the pinion teeth to ride up and over the ring teeth and splitting the case.
