If new OEM Mahle pistons did still exist you would want the late '86 through '93 2.0 turbo ones! As you probably already know your '85 pistons along with the 2.1 head cut your compression ratio way down. I do horde good used '86 up 16 valve turbo pistons however we're just starting on an '88 SPG compete restoration where I'm going to use a perfect standard block I have set aside and a real nice set of used standard pistons. Anyway I might not have another good used set but I'll let you know if I do? We do stock Forged Classic 900T pistons however the only set we have right now are for our longer rod combo and they're +0.05mm oversize. The forged 4032 alloy pistons we recommend for a street turbo application ends up very close to stock Mahle clearances with the added skirt coating we use. Even the 2618 alloy pistons we use in a serious turbo Saab aren't noisy on a cold morning with the Swain Tech Coatings we like best where we don't include the skirt coating in the actual clearance which makes up for the additional clearance required for the higher expansion rate. The trick is to finish hone the cylinder bores before the pistons are sent out for skirt coating so we know exactly what the clearance is before the coating is applied. Anyway we can get you a good price on either JE or Wiseco forged pistons with the right lower expansion rate as we do a good volume with both companies! We've even ordered them in what I call a fat standard so the cylinders can just be lightly honed rather than bored. If you have any question give us a call! Dave at Precision Turbo Works 805-235-3951
