I just got some too, for my '87 SPG. I have the fronts at least; the rears should be on their way soon.
I was wondering the same thing. Like you, I kinda ruled out 0 and 3 for the fronts (I think the rears only have 3 positions), so I was going to set them at 1 and see now they feel. The rears I guess I'd set in the middle position by the same logic.
The shocks have to be fully extended to adjust them, so you might be able to do it with the suspension at full droop and the nuts at the top just loosened.
