Also, think about the oil that gets pumped to the cams, lifters, etc. That has to get back to the sump (pan) somehow. That whole interior cavity that has oil in it, from the top of the head (under the valve cover) down to the oil pan is connected, and barring any tremendous flow rates of air (which shouldn't be happening), is all at the same pressure. It *is* evacuated by manifold vacuum, and as others have pointed out the purpose of the check valve is to prevent pressurizing this area when the manifold pressure is above ambient (which is only relevant on turbocharged cars).
