If it dies when put in gear that's usually caused by the differential being seized up as a consequence of running with no oil in the differential case. People (sometimes) check the ATF level but they almost never check the differential oil and it leaks out when the axle seals go bad. Eventually it runs completely dry and the differential locks up and is destroyed. Otherwise the parking pawl may be stuck but I don't recall ever seeing that happen with a T37. Take the rear cover off and see what the differential gears look like.
