Not sure which trim piece you need, but you will probably need to remove the knee bolster - there's not much room to reach anything with it in. You do not need to remove the steering wheel to get the knee bolster off, but removing the airbag wheel is not difficult.
First, make sure your steering wheel is perfectly straight so that you can set it correctly when you reinstall. Unplug your battery so the SRS does not read something funky. Then remove the two hex screws from behind the airbag and pull the airbag off. Lay the airbag metal side down in case it goes off - don't want it to become a projectile. Unscrew the big nut in the center of the steering wheel that connects it to the spindle. Then the hardest part - you need to remove the wheel itself carefully so as not to break the fragile clock spring underneath it. The clock spring is a round plastic case that houses a long coil of ribbon wire that connects your horn and airbag. If you pull the wheel off too hard, the case breaks, releasing the ribbon wire and you will need a new clock spring. I got cocky last week pulling off my wheel and broke mine and let me tell you - good clock springs are getting hard to find. Buy a 3-arm puller from Harbour Freight or something (they only cost like $15) and use that to pull the wheel carefully off the spindle. Then remove the clock spring and you're done.
