Starting issue - Cam Follower?

I have a '91 Turbo Conv with less than 100,000 miles. A while back it started acting up when I try to start it. Sometimes, it starts right up and purrs like a kitten. Other times, it turns over but clicks and pops and clunks like a worn out washing machine. When this happens, sometimes it will actually start, but will run very rough for about five minutes, then smooth out. Other times, it will not start, so I let it sit for ten or fifteen minutes and it will typically start and run smooth. I thought that it might be a cam follower issue, so checked them. Found two (one intake, one exhaust) that would not pump up when soaked in a light oil so replaced them. Unfortunately, it did not correct the problem.
There is no rhyme or reason as to when it will/will not start, but normally occurs after it has set more than a couple of hours. Once it starts and smooths over, it will always restart while running to the store or doing errands, unless it sits more than a couple of hours. Then, it is another crap shoot.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to check? I would be happy to pay for your time if we could chat over the phone.
Thank you.
