ID-ing C900s... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Mon, 29 Jul 2013 06:19:26 In Reply to: Re: hood thru the years, PaulS [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 27 Jul 2013 17:01:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The youngest C900 is now 20 (TWENTY!) years old.
Using the original factory year-to-year changes to confirm or dispute a model year specified in an online ad is an admirable pursuit, but you really cannot get to nit-picky this many years on, unless the seller is trying to pass it off as "completely original".
Emblems fall off, hoods get replaced, cars get into accidents, etc. Any one of which can cause things to be not so perfect. The worst part is that parts become obsolete, and are no longer available. Hoods are a good example. Saab has not made the two-vent hood in thirty years, and they also have not made a hood that didn't have the dimple for the Saab-Scania roundel for almost as long. The 1985- hood supersedes the other two in the parts database.
There's also a "small" S-S roundel for the rear of the car that was replaced with a larger version in 1988 or 89 (Brand awareness, and all that...), and you can not get a "new" small one to replace your "silver badge edition"...
Heck, even when they were still making them, body shops couldn't be bothered putting emblems on the right way or in the right place...
As for hoods, if I spotted a car on CL or the Bay with the "wrong" one, it would only be of concern if the owner was trying to pass it off as "never been in an accident", or "never had any body work done". I'd politely ask about the hood, and if they were evasive with the answer, I'd just walk away.
For exhausts, well, some folks just don't care, and take it to Midas, others are just too cheap to buy genuine Saab. So long as it works, what's the difference? Again, unless the seller is trying to say "completely original condition".
And don't forget, Saab DID sell "Sport Exhaust" systems for the C900...
Bottom line:
If you're paying a lot, and the seller is making all manner of "originality" claims, nit-pick away.
If you're getting a cheap ride, back off and enjoy the low price. Make it original if you like, but don't worry about it too much.
(As for me, I'll just be happy when people stop calling the 1991 900 turbo Convertible Special Edition (SE) cars "SPG"...)
