When heading out on a road trip (say to SOC where breaking down would be especially embarrassing). Do you a.) leave with just the Saab provided tools or b.) try to anticipate what might go wrong and plan accordingly?
If you choose option "a" you either believe the force will be with you, or believe in your own wrenching ability such that your Saab won't break down or figure that what ever tool or part you need will be the one that you didn't bring so why bring anything at all.
If you choose option "b", what do you bring? (As an aside, I have a friend who worked for Saab in the two-stroke days. He carried a spare engine and at least once swapped an engine on the side of the road!).
I lean towards option "b" - be prepared. I tend toward long on tools and short on parts because most parts that you can replaced on the side of the road you don't "need". For example you can drive with the AMM disconnected. Fuel pump is needed but a bitch to change on the road (unless you carry the full insert). DI is important for our T5 friends.
I have a special "car" toolbox that has my kit. I move it from car to car as needed. I use a plastic box that won't rust and is quiet. A key thing is these are medium quality so I won't be heart broken if it is stolen.
Here is my list. Add to it and make the list better...
The Saab enclosed tool kit
3/8 socket set
1/4 socket set (especially 7mm)
1/2 drive ratchet and 19MM socket
torx drivers
open-end/box metric wrench set
screw drivers
vise grips
dikes (wire cutting pliers)
some kind of knife that can cut a drive belt
* (assume that you have torqued your wheels yourself so no need for breaker bar for lugs. But a cheater bar wouldn't take up much room)
zip ties
bailing wire
shop rags
shirt that you can ruin
jumper wire to bypass fuel pump relay
full size spare
