Remove the differential cover plate and you'll see the roller bearing ends right behind the pinion gear (smaller gear, the big gear is called the "ring gear". Rotate all that stuff. there should be no visible play or shaking of the pinion shaft. It can be quite obvious (loose)or hard to tell ( if the rollers are good ) because you can't see the tapered roller surfaces unless you take EVERYTHING apart. Use a good flash light.
