& check engine light on.
This is a follow-up to my question back in May 2013. I found my answer, but I don't think it's going to apply to most people.
Unfortunately, I caused my problems. I was bolting the air conditioner compressor in since it had been sitting loose in place for 6 months (non-functional). I figured I'd save myself any potential problems with it.
Well, in my haste to get it tightened before the daylight was gone, I forgot one detail. I pushed the wiring harness down and tucked it under the edge of the compressor. I forgot that it goes over the top.
So, the harness (neatly tucked) got pushed out enough to have the edge of the wire bundle resting on the edge of the water pump pulley. So, after acting like a saw blade on the harness, it ended up cutting about halfway through. Shorted out and melted a number of wires and also fried my ECU.
The mechanic said he had never seen that in his years in the shop. It took them some time to locate the issue. And even more time to cut out & splice in new wires. Now that it's retaped, you barely see it. Totaled about $650. Ouch.
It was impressive that the car ran until the very last day (or last wire) got cut. It still ran (although like it had blown the intercooler hose) after it finally failed on the freeway.
So, I'd say, if you get these symptoms, check along the various wire looms and wire paths for potential spots for shorts or damage to the loom.
Mark :-)
