if you are contemplating this job be ready for a heck of a battle getting that axle off. all the bolts will be rusted on quite badly. doing this job on the floor of your garage will kill you, too. Many of the bolts are difficult to get at. You may need new body-to-axle brake line hoses and you WILL need all new bolts and nylocks judging by the rust you say you have everywhere.
i sandblasted, primed and painted my rear axle, using POR-15 which has held up really well for 7 years, hardly any rust. On my front components i sandblased and used Endura primer and red paint.
Frankly unless the car is a 'keeper' and has little to no rust anywhere else, i'd leave the rear axle alone.
as an aside I used Kilen red lowering springs which may be the ones Jon has on his car.

ps the PS torque rod is tough to get off as the body connection is tight against the gas tank. The tank probably has to be lowered 4-6 inches for you to get a socket on the inside nut. if others have a better way i'm all ears.
