if the battery is 12V, it is almost completely dead. 8V is beyond long gone! I think even 12.5 is only about 70% or something - iirc about 12.7V is fully charged. The bentley manual has a little chart of this. Oh, and that is with the battery disconnected also (though I've noticed little difference in our car connected or not so long as the car is off, but sometimes there are phantom drains happening)...
The best way to test the battery is to load test it. Usually free at parts stores.
This sounds like bad cables somewhere. It's really common to see either the red to the alternator or the ground frayed to almost nothing... also it is really common if the cables are original to have crumbling insulation + corrosion causing issues. Like John suggests, measuring the voltage across the battery and voltage drops across cables will help sleuth this out...
