OK, I rounded up all the old bulbs that I have. There are two that could be original saab and one that I definitely know is a US one from Wagner. All 3 have bases that are somewhat irregular but after a bit of work measured 0.595. This equates to 15.113 MM. I check the specification on Hella's bulb and find it to be 15 MM.
I am positive Justin is correct there is some differnece between originals and current US spec'd ones. Sesquehanna Motorsports in PA sells Hella bulbs and I am going to order a set and see what that does. Meanwhile, I have bent the sockets to try to improve the ground (again) but after a week some are dropping out.
I intended to probe the bulb bases to definitively determine this is a ground issue. We have a snow and ice storm going on and by the time I got the daily drivers cleared and did some chores am too cold to work in even a partially heated garage where the Saab lives.
Maybe next weekend.
