I never planned on doing much more than basic repairs on my Saabs when I started, but since then have had about 14 Saabs and done almost all of the work myself (usually because I was broke and couldn't afford to take them to a shop). There are a few things that I typically leave to the pros - convertible tops, paint, ... and headgaskets. It's not that these can't be done - probably most people on this board do do them on their own cars. But I figure there are a number of things that could go wrong with the job, and rather than hack through it and most likely screw it up and have the stress on my marraige from the three weeks of all my free time that it would take to do it over and over again, I would rather leave it to the pros.
Things that typically go wrong with a head gasket repair - broken exhaust studs (this SUCKS! But you can leave the manifolds on), broken turbo studs, head not planed (if it overheated, you could have warped your head - if it's not planed flat, the gasket will not seal and you're back to square one - you can only plane it a couple of times before you reach the depth limit), stretched head bolts (won't tighten back down all the way), etc.
So though you can definitely do it yourself, in my opinion it's worth the money to not have the stress. Just my 2 cents.
