For the first time you're timing a Turbo, it helps to take the hood off. Otherwise you have to lean over fender to get a good visual path to the timing marks through all of the plumbing.
Once you've gotten where the marks are in your mind, it's not so bad to lean over and squint through the ducts and coolant pipes.
Tom g's suggestion of marking the 16 degree spot on the flywheel is a good one.
Also, once you've loosened the distributor, use an open-end wrench of sufficient size to incrementally turn the distributor. You get better leverage / fine positioning control and won't overshoot - the distributor O ring tends to grab and release.
