The bentley illustration is wrong. That much has been known for years.
The cam, and thus, the distributor rotor, turns half as many times as the crank does. If you have the rotor pointing at #4 when it should be pointing at #1 (firing order 1-3-4-2), then turn the crank through 360 degrees again, and the rotor will turn the 180 degrees you need it to, and line up where you need it.
This is how all four-stroke engines work. The #1 piston (and the rest, too) comes to TDC twice in one firing cycle (which is TWO turns of the crank...). Once on compression/firing, and once on exhaust.
