Kinda depends on the tool - but you're going to need to have one of these in your toolbox pretty much no matter what and they aren't very expensive. You can also grind down the edge of the socket a bit. When they are stubborn I remove the entire elbow and put it in my shop vise - ultimately that ends up saving me time. If you don't have a vise, leaving it in the car probably provides the best leverage.
I've heated up the cast iron housing to help get it out, followed by liquid wrench if that doesn't work. It is definitely a PITA anyway you slice it.
