Paul,
when talking about isat-techII and similar diagnostics I'm not referring to pulling DTCs but to reading ECU real-time counters and internal parameters and comparing those values to what's actually happening. Like coolant temperature value:
- what the ECU thinks the current coolant temperature value is;
- what is the real coolant temperature (measured with thermometer);
- what is the output of the engine coolant temperature sensor.
DTCs are giving your a hint on what may be wrong. It's like you're a physician and there's a dude next to you:
- What's wrong, son? (read: do you have any DTCs recorded?)
- It's tickling in the stomach when I scratch my nose. (read: P1002 and P1057 recorded as intermittent faults, P1011 recorded as permanent fault)
- Ok. I need your blood test and thorax fluorography. (read: let's see what o2 and amm sensors have on their outputs and what does those signals look like inside the ECU)
And two cents off the top of my head re symptoms described:
- CEL goes on only if system detects an issue which affects emissions. E.g. it won't trigger it on if there's an intermittent CPS signal;
- usually it's some electronic component which fails at the high temperatures: hall sensor, ignition amplifier, ignition coil, ECU;
- does your tach needle bounce when it happens? if it does then it is ignition system related issue (it's the ignition system which supplies other systems like instrument cluster and EFI system with the RPM signal).
