Fuel sender floater aint floating...

91 900 NA 265k. Couple of years ago replaced the fuel level sender since it had fallen into pieces. Bought a new one from Eeuroparts and it worked good for a little. After that, it seemed to respond slower and slower after I filled up the tank until in no longer responded at all and the gauge would show empty and fuel light would be on all the time. Checked my wiring and the gauge and they work great.
So finally took the thing apart yesterday to try and diagnose. The problem is that the foam floater no longer wants to float. I removed it completely from the sender and put it in a jar of gas, and it goes right to the bottom. Has anybody experienced this and was able to fix it? The problem is that I don't think you can find new ones anymore and getting one from a junk yard is still getting you a 25-year old part that may be ready to fall apart any day. So I rather McGyver the current part since everything else on it is working perfectly.
TIA. Harold
