Rough Starting 85

My 85 900s is developing an annoying starting issue. As of lately it starts very rough and often dies within the first minute of start up if left on it's own. If I sit in the car and goose the gas pedal, I can ride the peaks and valleys and get it to running smoothly. I don't know much about these engines, I understand there is a hot/cold start system but I don't know how they work nor what to test. I'm going to swap one relay at a time this evening to see if its any of those. Any insight would be greatly helpful!
