Certainly sounds like a priming issue but a couple of things off the top of my head:
1. Bentley identifies one of the cam bearing bolts as an oiler. There is a procedure to crack one of those to help expel any air. IIRC.
2. Checking the oil pressure relief valve for smooth operation is a fairly quick task to make sure that is functioning properly (best done by a contortionist with small hands). Think this is technically on the timing cover, but if some crap got in there...
3. was the oil pump re-installed in the correct orientation? Can't remember the exact scenario, but there is a mark which needs to face a particular dimension. (I generally photograph things during dis-assembly as I have C.R.S.)
4. Have read on hear it can take some time for the lifters to pump up if left dry for a while. Sounds like this was a quick in and out job though.
5. Maybe try re-priming with an oil can slowly instead of a funnel to prevent any "air lock" happening. You are feeding the right hole, correct? Take no offense, I had to ask since I've done more stoopider things.
Good luck.
Nate
