well, if you can still get the tranny out of the last one :-)...
I would not worry too much. Like turbocon86 says - change the atf regularly with only Ford type F fluid. Try not to be too aggressive on the kickdown (eg though it will kick down on the highway - avoid that!)... around town, the fuel economy is just fine... it's about the same as highway. It just needs a 4th gear. If your wife's commute is not much high speed highway, fuel consumption will be ok relative to other cars... ok, well maybe nowadays all the cars are more fuel efficient, but you aren't buying a modern car - even the 5 speed is not like that.
but yeah, regular atf changes. I can not stress that enough. I think many of these die because they never got it changed in ages. This is not a modern tranny, but it can work surprisingly well for what it is (if you take care of it).
